Scott Kevin (Scooter) Abernathey

Scott Kevin Abernathey (Scooter) passed away in his home, surrounded by his family, on November 3, 2023.

He was born in Cedar Rapids, IA and resided in California before moving to Remer, MN in 1974. Later in life, he attended Hibbing Community College.

Scott enlisted into the Navy in 1975 where he served as a Gunner’s Mate. Afterwards, he worked in farming, then for Asplundh before starting his own business, Viking Tree  Service. Scott lived his life following his heart, and his true profession was always making music. He was the frontman of The Buzzardz for decades. Through the years, his music touched the lives of many.

Scott also volunteered on multiple missionary trips to the Phillipines, where he would spend his time restoring churches, playing for the locals, and spreading the word of God. Scooter loved gifting his talent of playing music to many local benefits and entertaining elders in the nursing home. 

Scott loved the hippie lifestyle, outlaw music, and roadtrips on his Harley with his wife. He was a member of the Hibbing VFW. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on cars with his brothers. He was a big fan of the Vikings and the Mesabi Range Norsemen. He crafted beautiful guitars. He gave the warmest hugs and made the best spaghetti. 

Scott had a gift for storytelling, and started writing songs at an early age. He was best able to express the messages of his soul through music. But ultimately what gave him the biggest smile was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. 

He will be met in Heaven by his brother Mark Abernathey, sister Lesa Abernathey, Granddaughters Kylee Cagle, Emma Abernathey, and Grandson Everett Abernathey.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Diana Abernathey; parents, Guy and Berta Abernathey; children Rachel Abernathey, Levi (Gretchen) Abernathey, Adrienne (John) Cagle, Sarah (Brandon) Abernathey, Rosanne Abernathey, Tori (Chris) Miller, Scott ( Rachael) Abernathey, Garrett (Jess) Abernathey, Markee ( Matthew) Osterhoudt, July Abernathey and 30 beautiful grandchildren; his inherited children, Joshua (Roni) Coen, Samantha Ross, Tj (Leslie) Ross, Tyler, and Tuleah Palmer; siblings; Bethel (Jeff) Fremouw, Kent (Della) Abernathey, Clint (Maria) Abernathey  and his favorite dog Huck. Scott is also survived by his many very close friends who impacted his life so much that they were more than just friends; they were considered his brothers. 

Scooter will be greatly missed by many. Though you left this world with a heart still full of love and life, we trust you are now truly “feeling free.”
