Reverend Donna M. (Westberg) Spicer, 88, was promoted to glory on January 13, 2018 at Guardian Angels in Hibbing, MN.
She was born on October 3, 1929 in Red Wing, MN to Algot and Ida Mae Westberg. She grew up in Red Wing and graduated high school there in 1949. She married John D. Spicer on November 24th, 1949. Together they attended The Salvation Army School of officers training in Chicago, Illinois. They were army officers for many years, serving in the Men's Social in Minneapolis and Hillsdale. They also served in Petoskey, Michigan; Muscatine, Iowa; Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Waukesha, Wisconsin; as well as Albert Lea, Minnesota, then here in Hibbing, MN. They were instrumental in securing the current Salvation Army building in Hibbing. After they left The Salvation Army, they pastored numerous churches in the Midwest. Donna and her husband spent their entire lives serving the Lord and the communities they lived in. Upon their retirement they bought their small dream home in Ely, Minnesota.
Donna was an accomplished pianist and had the most beautiful singing voice ever heard. Her cooking and baking were above reproach and she enjoyed making meals for her family, friends, and each community they pastored at. She also taught piano, ceramics, and made beautiful porcelain dolls. Everyone loved her handmade quilts. Her sense of humor was well known. She loved a good clean joke; although she got them wrong at times.
As a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother (or gram), great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, no one can begin to compare. She was the matron of the family and we were so richly blessed to have her in our lives. She lived her life loving the Lord; it was of upmost importance to her that all of her children and their children have a strong faith and live their lives as an example to others, always trusting God to direct their lives. Her memory will live on in all who knew and loved her. It's hard to lose her, but heaven is brighter now that she is where she longed to be- sheltered in the arms of God.
She is survived by her daughters and son: Julie (Wayne) Smith, Jackie (Scott) Miller, both of Hibbing, Jae (Kraig) Wuori of Chisholm, and Tim (Kris) Spicer of Kansas, 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and her rescue dog Maddie.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reverend John D. Spicer; sisters, Hazel, Millie, and Charlotte; son, John "Doug" Spicer; and son-in-law, Scott Miller.
We, as a family, would like to thank the nurses and aides at Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center for the love and care they gave to Donna. She loved many of the staff there.
