Raymond C. Luukkonen, 88, of Cherry, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018 at Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Virginia Serviceman's Club at 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. Military Honors will be accorded by Virginia Honor Guard. Arrangements are with Range Funeral Home in Virginia.
Raymond Clifford Luukkonen was born October 15, 1929 in Zim to Albert and Helmi (Hendrickson) Luukkonen. He was raised in Zim and attended schools in Cherry. Following school, he worked with his brothers in the woods. On July 28, 1951, he was united in marriage to Nancy Anderson in Fort Smith AR. In 1951, Raymond was drafted into the Army and he received his honorable discharge in 1953.
Following his military service, he worked as a mechanic on heavy equipment for road construction. He spent 11 years with Hoover Construction, 25 years with Ulland Brothers, and had worked for various other companies. He was very proud to have built the family home from top to bottom.
Raymond enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and spending time with family and friends.
He was a former commander of the VFW Post #1113 and lifetime member of the Legion Post #239. Raymond was also a Local 49 union member for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Cherry; sons, Chris (Laurel) Luukkonen of Cherry and Steven (Dorothy) Luukkonen of Carlin, NV; daughter, Nancy "Elaine" Kehn of Hibbing; 7 Grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren; 5 Great-Great Grandchildren; sisters: Esther Koivunen and Lorraine Aho; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers, and 3 sisters.
