Pearl Alaspa Obituary

Pearl Grace Lenore Alaspa, 91, of Virginia, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at St. Michael’s Health and Rehab in Virginia. A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church at 2:00 pm with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate. Pearl Grace Lenore Silverberg Alaspa was born December 29, 1925 in Soudan, MN to John and Ida (Koski) Silverberg. She graduated from Tower High School in 1943. Following high school, Pearl attended the College of St. Scholastica, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. She was united in marriage to Kenneth George Alaspa on September 3, 1949 and the couple resided in Embarrass, MN. In 1957, she was hired by Range Hospital Corp., operators of the former Pioneer’s Infirmary, to help organize and teach the Virginia School of Practical Nursing. The school later moved to the Virginia School District and is now in Eveleth. Pearl retired in June of 1986. She moved to Virginia in 1993 and resided at the Laurentian Manor.

Pearl was a member of the Embarrass Evangelical Lutheran Church, she served on the church council and helped organize Sunday School and was the organist. After moving to Virginia, she transferred her church membership to Gethsemane Lutheran Church and joined the senior choir and Naomi Circle, and served on the Parish Council. Pearl joined the Ladies of Kaleva Soinnuttaren Tupa #32 of Virginia and Lokka Tupa. She served in several officer positions and as a pianist.

Pearl also had a lifetime membership to Sisu Heritage of Embarrass, was active in Lutheran Brotherhood St. Louis County Branch 8421, now known as Thrivent.

Brothers: John Roger (Rosemary) Silverberg and Karen, Scott, Eric, Pamela, and Kristine

Jacob Wesley (Frances) Silverberg and Greta, Karla; Pearl was also Wesley’s guardian

Other nieces, nephews, and cousins

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Kenneth, and son-in-law, George Mead
