Lois Geraldine Gunderson, a person full of love and generosity, left a legacy of warmth and compassion when she passed away on July 4, 2024, in Duluth, MN, due to complications from a MAI lung infection. Born on January 7, 1938, in Orr, MN, Lois lived a life characterized by her nurturing spirit and unwavering commitment to her family, friends, and community.
Lois's life began in the serene surroundings of Orr, MN, where she was raised by a loving family and a caring community. She graduated from Orr High School ready to experience the world. Her desire for knowledge and connection led her, later in life, to The College of St. Scholastica, where she delved into Relational-Cultural Theory and broadened her horizons through Travel Abroad courses. Lois was a lifelong learner who embraced the world as her teacher.
Professionally, Lois dedicated herself to the well-being of others. Her early years as a nursing assistant at the Virginia Municipal Hospital laid the foundation for her empathy and service. In the 1970s, she extended her care to the community through Meals on Wheels, ensuring that no one was left hungry or alone. Lois's passion for understanding human experiences guided her in conducting surveys in the 1980s, contributing valuable insights to the Federal Government's understanding of rural and urban social needs. Her compassionate heart led her to serving our community for 12 years as a hospice volunteer, where she provided solace and support to those at the twilight of their lives.
Lois's 64 years of marriage to her beloved husband, Melvin "Bud" Gunderson, is a testament to enduring love. Together, they raised a family that reflected their shared values of kindness and being of service to others. Dale Gunderson, his wife Shannon, and their sons Phillip and Preston; Connie Gunderson, and her pups HokusPokus and Billie; David Gunderson, his wife Amy, and their children Alexis and Taylor; Sally Jo Heikkinen, her husband Barry, and their children Michael, Danny, and Rachel; and Jeffery Gunderson, his wife Paula, and their son Jordan, all carry forward Lois's spirit of generosity and kindness.
Lois's zest for life was contagious. She loved music. She enjoyed baking. She loved spending time at the cabin. She loved to travel. Her enthusiasm for exploring the world was matched by her love for people. Lois embraced different cultures with an open heart, making friends across the globe and returning home with stories that inspired others to see the beauty in diversity.
The words that best capture Lois's essence are loving, generous, and engaged. She poured her soul into every interaction, every hug, every smile, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, Aftenro “family” and numerous lifelong friends will attest to the warmth of her embrace and the sincerity of her interest in their lives.
Lois's legacy is not merely in the roles she fulfilled but in the lives she transformed. She taught us that what really matters is found in the relationships we nurture and the love we share. Her life was grounded in compassion, showing us that the simplest acts of kindness are often the most profound. In every sense, Lois lived a life that mattered. Lois's life was a tapestry woven with threads of joy, empathy, and unwavering support, a beautiful pattern that will continue to inspire and guide us.
As we bid farewell to Lois Geraldine Gunderson, let us celebrate the wonderful woman she was and the incredible life she lived. Although she is not physically present with us, her spirit continues to shine, encouraging us to live with purpose, to love without reservation, and to leave the world a little better than we found it. Thank you, Lois, for sharing your life with us.
“Fly High”. You are loved… always!
