Leonard John "Len" Youngman, age 107, passed into the Lord's keeping on the afternoon of October 16, 2018 at the Virginia Care Center, Virginia, MN. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 11:00 am, with a visitation one hour prior. Fr. Brandon Moravitz will officiate. Arrangements are with Range Funeral Home in Virginia.
Len was born March 27, 1911 to John and Mary Youngman of Sleepy Eye, MN. He was married in 1938 to Mathilda "Millie" Hillesheim and they remained happily married until her death in 1997. The last three years of Millie's life, she resided at the Virginia Care Center, and Len was in close and loving attendance to her every day. After her passing, Len remained as a volunteer at the Virginia Hospital and Care Center, becoming a familiar and beloved figure during 25 years of service. His selfless and cheerful service to others has been recognized with Volunteer Awards by the County, City and Essentia. He was recently presented a key to the City of Virginia.
Len always set an example of what a man, a Christian, and a dedicated sportsman ought to be. He worked as a salesman for 31 years for the George A. Hormel Company. An avid hunter and fisherman well past the age of 100, he taught his sons and grandchildren the joy of these sports, as well as the need to care for the wellbeing of the land and game species pursued. Len was a dedicated pool player, organizing neighborhood tournaments in his basement and playing regularly at the Senior Center. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he sang in the choir, and served in many other capacities including bringing communion to residents of the Virginia Care Center.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lucy, Rex and Marie.
He is survived by his younger sister, Marge "Monnie" Sykes of Golden, Colorado; his sons, David (Joan), James (Christine) and Robert (Nancy). Len has seven grandchildren, John, Janel (Steve) Puttre, Mark, Adam, Amanda (Aaron) Carrier, Joel (Stephanie), and Jill (Sam) Papin. He also has four great granddaughters, one great grandson and two great great grandsons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Marquette School would be appreciated.
