Leo Maki Obituary

Leo G. Maki, 101, of Buhl, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at Northland Village in Buhl. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Fr. Anthony Craig will be the Celebrant. Military Honors will be accorded by the Mid-Range Honor Guard. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl. Arrangements are with Range Funeral Home in Hibbing. Leo was born July 31, 1916, in Town of White, MN to Henry and Josephine (Antilla) Maki. He graduated from Martin Hughes High School in Buhl in 1934. On January 31, 1942, he was united in marriage to Elda Grigoni in Chisholm. Leo served in the Mechanized Cavalry Division during World War II in the European Theater. He was wounded on July 21, 1944 at the battle near St. Lo, France, and he was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was employed for 24 years at Jones and Laughlin Steel where he worked as a welder, bulldozer and pit foreman, and he was a welder at the Whiteside Mine. He retired as maintenance supervisor from the Buhl schools after 21 years of service. He served on the Buhl Village Council for 9 consecutive years. He was a member of the American Legion for over 70 years and served as Post Commander for the American Legion of Buhl. He was a member and Governor of the Buhl Moose and belonged to the Buhl Knights of Columbus, Senior Citizen’s Center, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a MN D.N.R. volunteer gun safety firearms instructor for 50 years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl.
Leo is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elda; brother, Veikko Maki; and sister, Leah Leone.
Leo is survived by:
Two daughters: Kathleen (Art) Laine of Chisholm
Lonie (Terry) Hartikka of Virginia
Two sons: Louis (Judy) Maki of Duluth
Mark (Emily) Maki of Mt. Iron
11 grandchildren
19 great-grandchildren
1 brother: Tapio Maki of Buhl
2 sisters-in-law: Gloria Kuluvar of Chisholm
Marian Grigoni of Bullhead City, AZ
Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
The family of Leo would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Northland Village of Buhl staff, Cornerstone Villa staff, Fairview Hospice, and Dr. Copeman for all their loving care. Thank you to Mark, Diane, and Nancy for their help transporting Leo to Holy Smoley. In lieu of gifts or flowers, memorials are preferred to Fairview Hospice.
