Lars Eugene Gabrielson, age 55, passed away unexpectedly on March 10th, 2026 at the Cook Hospital in Cook, Minnesota.
Lars was born on December 15th, 1970 in International Falls, Minnesota to Cecile and Gerald Gabrielson. He spent part of his childhood on the East Coast before returning to the Orr area with his family in 1978.
He grew up in Gheen, alongside his brothers and sister, where his parents owned and operated the well-established Cecile’s Lost Weekend. Lars graduated from Orr High School in 1988. During those years he helped found the “Rubber Knife” gang and played bass in the local legendary garage band, Celestian for several years.
Throughout his life Lars worked for various local loggers and sawmills. He spent the last 25 years working as a laborer for KGM Contractors, Inc. taking great pride in his work and the people he worked alongside.
Lars married the love of his life Violet Barto on March 3, 2006. Together, they built a life centered on family, friends and community. Lars was known for his generosity to help anyone in need and to lend a helping hand. He especially treasured quality time with his grandchildren who affectionately called him “Mookie Lars or Diddy”.
With his quick wit and strong Scandinavian spirit, Lars loved holidays, the Minnesota Vikings, and a cold beer by a hot campfire. A good dance tune and a willing partner were all he needed to show off his dance moves. The loss of our tallest tree will be felt by many, but the roots Lars planted in family, friendship and community will endure.
Lars is preceded in death by his parents, Cecile and Gerald Gabrielson; stepfather Jim Deibler; in-laws Rose and Ernie Barto.
Lars is survived by his love, Violet. Children Sandra (Garth) Wilson of Balkan, Patricia (Tyler) Drieman of Orr and Bruce (Natasha) McCarthy of Hibbing; grandchildren Cecilia, Donald and Roseanna; siblings Serena (Alex) Andersen, Eric Gabrielson, Nels (Mary) Gabrielson of Orr, Brad Deibler; his Barto in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2026 with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. and service to follow at 12:00 p.m. at the Orr Community Center (Old Legion) in Orr. Luncheon will be served following the service. Interment will be at a later date.
