Janice Leppala Obituary

Janice Fay Leppala, 79, passed away unexpectedly due to complications from diabetes and asthma the evening of February 22, 2024 at her home in Wuori Township, MN.

Janice was born on June 7, 1944 in Norman County, MN to Thelma Luella (Larson) and Vernes Dewan Holty. When she was four years old, her mother remarried to Elmer Thompson who loved and raised Janice as if she were his own.

Janice grew up during times of scarcity where it was expected for all members of the family to pull their full weight. This often led her to working tirelessly, keeping house and caring for her three younger siblings whom she loved dearly. Nurturing and raising her brothers and sister placed a strong importance on family which she carried throughout her life.

Janice was united in marriage to Morris Kenneth Leppala on May 6, 1961. In the course of their marriage, they had four children together: Kenny, Debi, Marsha and Lee. These four tested her limits in patience a time or two, but she and they all knew there was absolutely no limit to her love for them. She adored them all. She would have given everything she had for her children and sometimes did.

Janice was a wonderful hostess. As soon as a car was heard coming up the gravel driveway, she made sure coffee was brewing, cream & sugar were at the ready and homemade sweets were on the table. The hospitality, conversation and laughter were unmatched. Because of this, friends and neighbors would filter in and out of the Leppala house every day. As Janice got older and health issues became more prevalent, she enjoyed meeting up for Bingo Wednesdays at the town hall, visiting with friends on Fridays to read the Hometown Focus at her house, and chatting with both friends and loved ones on the phone any chance she had.

Of all the roles Janice had during her life, her most favorite was being a grandmother— in her eyes, no star or sun could shine brighter than her grandchildren. If you were ever blessed to be on her phone call rotation, she would waste no time in telling you all about their lives, achievements, and how much she loved them. She was the very best grandma. She would get on her hands and knees to play trucks or dolls, teach her grandkids how to make her favorite sweets, make sure the pantry was stocked with their favorites, and give the very best hugs and kisses. She would also sing her self-created “I am a lucky grandma” song proudly in public for anyone who would listen.

Our lives were so much brighter because Janice was in it. She touched the lives of many— family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. Her signature song may have said she was lucky, but in reality, we were the lucky ones.

Janice is preceded in death by her husband, Morris Leppala; parents, Thelma and Elmer Thompson; father, Vernes Holty; brother, Ronald Thompson; grandson Logan Leppala; grandson Corey Leppala and many other family and close friends.

Janice’s memory and love lives on through her children, Kenneth Leppala, Debra (Scott) Maki, Marsha Blake, and Lee (Wendy) Leppala; brother, Lowell Thompson; sister, Delane Stene; grandchildren, Dillon, Dalton and Sheldan Leppala, Christopher and Danielle Maki, Cassie (Alex) Blake, Kaila (Josh) Adkins, and Paisley Feltus; 11 great grandchildren; and countless other loved ones.
