Helen Elsie Nurmi

Helen Nurmi crossed over on the 4th of July. What a grand celebration for a grand lady and a life well lived.

We celebrate Helen as a true renaissance woman, who could do anything once she put her mind to it, and usually taught herself how to do it.

Many will remember her as a master seamstress, doing alterations for most of the downtown Virginia clothing stores. She was the only person in Northern Minnesota who did invisible mending & reweaving, which she learned from a correspondence course.

She loved working for Dr Skip Bol as his office manager. She cashiered for awhile at Natural Harvest and when she finally retired, she ended her career working at Viking Village, surrounded by her passion…anything sewing.

Helen was an amazing artist and craftswoman, teaching herself how to paint with oils & watercolor, wood carve, quilt and master four different knitting machines.

She is celebrated and dearly missed by her loving family – her daughter Ardy Nurmi-Wilberg & her husband Wayne of Virginia, her son Ken Nurmi & his wife Sonja of Elkmont Alabama, her grandson Brandon Nurmi, Holly & Kaitlin of Eveleth, and grandson Shawn Nurmi & Tonya of Longbeach California. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Wesley Nurmi.

How wonderfully appropriate for her to pass on the 4th of July, we celebrated her grand life and independence with fireworks…and we will every time we see them!!

At Helen’s request there will be no funeral.
