Eleanor Jarvi Obituary

Eleanor Marjorie Jarvi, age 95, of Makinen, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023, at Waterview Pines in Virginia, where she resided the last 3 years. Eleanor was born to Wayne and Lempi (Laine) Koski on April 17, 1928, in Hibbing. She grew up on Stevenson Location near Hibbing, and graduated from Hibbing High School.

Eleanor worked many jobs, her first being in advertising for Mesabi Daily News and then FW Woolworths. She got married in 1949 to Howard Mattson of Makinen. Making their home in Makinen, and starting their family with baby girl, Karen. Circumstances took a turn, and Eleanor remarried in 1963 to Wiljo Jarvi of Biwabik. Eleanor and Bill continued to grow their home in Makinen. Both managing The Makinen Market, volunteering on the Fire Department, and later owning and operating Jarvi Saw & Tool in downtown Makinen.

Eleanor loved to crochet in her spare time (not sure when that was), creating beautiful hand work. She was always dancing and singing or humming a tune. Agate seeking adventures after a rain were a thing in our household. One would always find her in the gardens or in the kitchen, cooking meals for all her girls, canning top notch pickles, and baking her famous cinnamon rolls in which she would have to hide from the girls and their friends. She had many names, Gram, Grammy, and Gram Jarvi. She treasured her family and friends, her house was everyone’s house, all were welcome.

She was the strongest, most hard-working, courageous, independent, wise, and witty woman that one could ever imagine. She kept you on your toes and didn’t let you give up. She had SISU!

Eleanor is survived by her sister, Lorraine Niskala; daughter, Karen (Jarvi) Miller; granddaughters: Rhonda Hirdler, Kristin Tuhkanen (Troy), Dawn Aho (Gabe), great grandchildren: Ashley Moreland, Alixandra Olin, Lindsay Olin, Axel Aho, Annika Aho, and Boden Boyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Lempi Koski; husbands: Howard Mattson, Wiljo Jarvi; special friend, Joe Bauman: nephew, Allan Niskala: and granddaughter, Donna Parks.
