Elaine Jean Fontecchio, age 85, of Aurora, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Carefree Living in Aurora, Minnesota.
Elaine was born in Wakefield, Michigan, on February 23, 1940, to Einor and Minnie Wertanen.
Back in the day if you ever stopped at Halmets Store in Palo, you probably met our mom, Elaine, at the checkout.
As an excellent cook and baker, she also worked at Rods in McKinnley, Allisons Cafe, My Moms Pasties, Aiti's and East End Market in Aurora, and the Mooseline Cafe in Palo.
As friends would stop by for coffee, she always offered a home baked goodie, remember her cinnamon, caramel and orange rolls?!
Aside from that, we will remember how she lived by example. Our mom minded her own business, worked hard, spoke respectfully, was hospitable and so giving; she was a woman of few words whose actions spoke volumes, she always showed up for us.
We will remember our mom's love for music and dance, and her kind, gentle way.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Einor and Minnie Wertanen; sisters, Evelyn (Ronnie) Lahnala, and Sally (Bill) Minkin; husband of 21 years, Dick Fontecchio; and brothers: Everett (Carol), Alvin (Jane), and Ronald (Darlene) Wertanen.
Elaine is survived by her four children: Carrie Leffel of Aurora, Minnesota, Brian (Shelly) Leffel of Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, Linda (Jeff) Patterson of Hibbing, Minnesota, and Rob (Jen) Leffel of Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota; along with nine grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
There will be a private family service held at the First Baptist Church in Aurora, Minnesota. Officiated by John Jacquart.
