Bonita “Bonnie” Rae Murray, 75, of Mountain Iron, MN passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 2, 2023, at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis.
Bonnie was born in Warren, MN on May 1, 1948 to Hans and Ruth Kirkeide and was raised on a farm near Argyle, MN. She attended school in Argyle, where she played cornet and French horn in the band; and was a majorette in the marching band. After high school she attended the Duluth School of Practical Nursing, where she earned her Licensed Practical Nurse certification. After finishing her schooling, Bonnie returned to northwestern Minnesota to work at the hospital in Thief River Falls, MN. During this time she met the love of her life, Larry “Skip” Murray. Their courtship was interrupted by Skip being drafted into the US Army. After returning from Vietnam, Skip and Bonnie were married at Alma Lutheran church near Argyle. They settled in Mountain Iron, MN where they raised two sons. Bonnie worked in nursing for 30 years before retiring. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Virginia, MN and was active in supporting the local Boy Scout troop. She enjoyed baking, knitting, fishing, camping, outdoor activities, vacationing in Cozumel, Mexico and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Ruth Kirkeide; her in-laws, Don and Helen Murray; and her sister, Kathleen Larson.
She is survived by her husband of 52+ years, Larry “Skip” Murray of Mt. Iron, MN; her son, Aaron (Colleen) Murray of Moorhead, MN; her son, Donald (Jill) Murray of Knife River, MN; her sister, Madelyn (Leroy) Vigen; her brother, Harlan (Nancy) Kirkeide; her brother-in-law, David Larson; her grandchildren, Morgan and Hudson Murray; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Bonnie’s family is incredibly grateful to all the caregivers that have assisted with her care, including the staff at the Diamond Willow in Mt. Iron and Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Bonnie Murray will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Virginia, MN on December 11, 2023, at 11:00 AM. A visitation will take place one hour before the service. Her internment will be at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery-Duluth at a later date.
