Arden Gene Curry

Arden Gene Curry, 90, of Biwabik, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 27, 2017 at the Assembly of God Church in Aurora at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be at the Assembly of God Church in Aurora on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Derrick DeTurk will officiate. Arden was born July 15, 1927 in Butterfield, MN to Frank and Gladys (Lowman) Curry. He grew up in St. James, Minnesota. He left school in the 12th grade to join the Navy and served in WWII as a 1st Class Fireman on the USS Birmingham in the Pacific Theater. After returning from the War, he married Viola Messal. The couple had six children together. On March 22, 1971 he was united in marriage to Frances Powell. They made their home together in Biwabik for 45 years and had two children. He worked as a cement mason for over 50 years and belonged to the Cement Masons and Plasterers Union, Local 633. He co-owned and operated Sullivan and Curry for 25 years with Bob Sullivan of Hibbing. After Bob’s retirement he owned Curry Concrete until he retired in 2012 at the age of 85.

He loved to fish, hunt, and dog sled. He organized the Laurentian International Dog Sled races in Biwabik and raced his own dogs on the local circuit. His favorite winter activity was dog sledding into the Boundary Waters to fish lake trout. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Aurora, the American Legion, and contributed to the VFW.

He will be remembered by all who knew him as a man that valued hard work. He was generous with his time and knowledge. He loved to share memories about his many life experiences and these stories will be sorely missed.
